Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Passary

General Questions

What is Passary?
Passary is a local-first, zero-knowledge password manager that stores all your passwords encrypted on your device. Unlike cloud-based password managers, your data never leaves your device unless you explicitly export it.
Is Passary free?
Yes, Passary is completely free to use. There are no premium tiers, subscriptions, or paid features. We believe password security should be accessible to everyone.
What browsers does Passary support?
Passary works on all modern browsers that support Web Crypto API, IndexedDB, and LocalStorage. This includes Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers.

Security Questions

How secure is Passary?

Passary uses military-grade encryption:

  • Argon2id for key derivation (winner of the Password Hashing Competition)
  • AES-256-GCM for encryption (used by governments and military)
  • Zero-knowledge architecture - we cannot access your data even if we wanted to
Can Passary see my passwords?
No. Your passwords are encrypted on your device before being stored. Your master password never leaves your device, and we have no way to decrypt your vault. This is mathematically guaranteed by our zero-knowledge architecture.
What if someone hacks Passary's servers?
Your passwords would be safe. We don't store your vault data on our servers—it's stored locally on your device. Even if our website were compromised, attackers would only gain access to the application code, not your encrypted passwords.
Is my master password stored anywhere?
No. Your master password exists only in your browser's memory while your vault is unlocked. It's never written to storage, never transmitted over the network, and never logged. When you lock your vault, it's cleared from memory.

Usage Questions

Can I sync Passary across devices?
Passary doesn't provide automatic cloud sync to maintain our zero-knowledge guarantee. However, you can manually export your vault file and import it on other devices. For convenience, you can store the encrypted vault file in your own cloud storage (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) and import it when needed.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Your vault will be deleted from the browser. This is why regular backups are critical. If you have a backup vault file, you can simply import it back into Passary after clearing browser data.
Can I import passwords from other password managers?
Currently, you need to manually add entries to Passary. We're working on import functionality for common password manager export formats (CSV, JSON). Check back for updates!
Is there a mobile app?
Passary is a web application that works in mobile browsers. You can access it on your phone by visiting passary.com in Safari (iOS) or Chrome (Android). A dedicated mobile app may be developed in the future.
Does Passary autofill passwords in browsers?
Currently, Passary doesn't have browser extension integration for autofill. You can manually copy passwords from your vault and paste them where needed. Browser extension support may be added in the future.

Recovery & Backup

What if I forget my master password?

Unfortunately, your vault cannot be recovered.

This is not a limitation but proof of our zero-knowledge architecture. If we could reset your password, it would mean we have access to your data (which defeats the purpose of zero-knowledge encryption).

How do I backup my vault?

To backup your vault:

  1. Open your unlocked vault
  2. Click "Export Vault" or similar button
  3. Save the encrypted file to a secure location

We recommend storing backups in multiple locations (external drive, encrypted cloud storage, etc.).

Is the exported vault file encrypted?
Yes! The exported vault file is encrypted with your master password. Someone who finds your backup file cannot access your passwords without your master password. However, keep backups secure as a precaution.

Privacy & Data

What data does Passary collect?

We collect virtually no data:

  • No passwords or vault data (stored locally on your device)
  • No personal information (no accounts, no emails)
  • No analytics or tracking (no Google Analytics, etc.)
  • Minimal server logs (automatically deleted within 7 days)

Does Passary use cookies?
We don't use tracking cookies. We use browser LocalStorage and IndexedDB to store your encrypted vault and preferences locally. These are essential for the application to function and do not track you.Read our Cookie Policy →
